Arizona Mid-Century 1950-1970: The Jim Gorraiz Photographs

Presenter: Marilyn Szabo, Photographer, and Marshall Shore, “The Hip Historian”

Jim Gorraiz operated the Casa Grande Photo Shop for 25 years from 1950 until 1975. This large collection of photographs from 4 x 5 negatives, provides a concise historical mid-century Modern portrait of Arizona, while capturing the energy of the post war boom happening throughout the country. The photographs show the modernization of architecture, signage, transportation, new suburbia, and the marketing of appliances into American homes in the 1950’s and 60’s. Attendees will learn about the businesses, people, Main streets, and spring training in the Casa Grande Valley. A discussion about the research and methods that were used will be presented.
